If you're not outraged you're not paying attention....I applaud your outrage Lee...It is sometimes
necessary to get angry in order to jar the system to change. The majority of citizens have been lulled to sleep and are either totally unaware of the
seriousness of environmental, economic, and moral issues about to engulf us while those vested in the status quo refuse to recognize the "urgency of
now" and keep plodding unimaginatively ahead......I think a good example in popular culture of what Lee is driving at is Popular Mechanics magazine. Total
militaristic hype and "bigger/louder is better" mentality.... What Lee is saying is that if we are not part of the solution we are part of the
problem...... Unfortunately very few people are getting out of their comfort zone to be part of the solution......
Lee's pain and outrage are clear. Like another who posted here, I fear that the method proposed and the inherent anger may be counter productive and may lead to potentially dangerous levels of frustration and certainly to burnout....there's nothing quite so exhausting as fighting a dragon.....Lee, I hope you are conserving significant amounts of resources and energy for the "long haul"...I hope your intent is not to "win or die trying" ...I remember when you came to town. You were poking around quietly, seriously and thoughtfully looking for a cause... I was, and am, connected to the impeachment cause, another reason for outrage.....Just recognize that "Rome wasn't built in a day." and that, although there is an "urgency of now", the world will still be beset with problems the day we die. I admire your level outrage and your commitment to solutions. I am ashamed for those who hurl taunts at you. There are many creative people who have been frustrated by the lack of our society to confront serious problems seriously. Don't allow yourself to become among the permanently damaged and forgotten...Plan your tactics carefully, don't just hurl yourself at the wall. Good luck...it would be refreshing to see some enlightened programing....
I used to be a Bering Sea fisherman out of Dutch Harbor. I think you have a valid point in that the fishing show simply glamorizes the hardships and does nothing at all to educate the public about the serious depletion of global fisheries...The global circumstance is rapid decline in all level of quality and abundance...Those who want to help us "Discover" the planet, should be very busy pointing out the abundant challenges we are facing....all to often they are frightened off by powerful vested interests who wish only to see the public mollified.
I have a solution for you...google Jim Starry and/or Starrport. It is quite clearly a simple and elegant solution to resolve some of the immense pollution problems generated by jumbo jet traffic. It is simply this, by inclining runways so that a jet lands on an uphill slope and takes off on a downhill slope immense amounts of jetfuel are saved by letting gravity play its role. The benefits are too extensive to cover now but I can put you in touch if you wish to help Jim produce a documentary to offer to the Discovery Channel. His level of commitment for the last 25 years has been immense, but he has been ill equipped to fight the dragon, despite recognition in major international media...
The course of history has its ups and downs, for better or worse. I only hope that when I die, I will have helped it swing towards the better.
Buckminster Fuller's epitaph is said to read, "I wish to be remembered as a trimtab." On large ships the trimtab is a small rudder that is used to deflect water pressure on the big rudder to help turn it.
May we all be trimtabs.
